Adulterant Description Normal Range Purpose in Drug Testing
Creatinine (CR) Creatinine is a byproduct of muscle metabolism, present in urine at stable concentrations. Low levels may indicate a diluted or substituted sample. > 20 mg/dL Detects diluted or non-human urine specimens.
Specific Gravity (SG) Specific gravity measures urine density compared to water. Abnormal values can indicate dilution or substitution of the sample. 1.003 – 1.030 Identifies excessively diluted or tampered urine specimens.
pH Level (pH) pH measures how acidic or alkaline the urine is. Abnormal pH may result from adulteration to mask drug use. 4.5 – 8.0 Detects chemical adulteration or non-human urine.
